I think it is critical for architects to change how they model within SketchUp, and learning a few quick extensions can save tons of billable hours when used correctly. It is understandable to dedicate more of their time and effort to Revit or CAD when thinking about project milestone deliverables. It is very typical for SketchUp users to think they are using the program efficiently and effectively, even modeling in the same way they learned 10+ years ago when first getting introduced to the program. It was not until I started working at SketchUp that I truly understood the power of extensions. All this effort added up time and time again, creating a lot of wasted energy due to inefficient modeling practices, or a lack of standards between team members. Inevitably, the design changed, more detail was always needed, and external site factors needed to be shown to adequately portray our design. Models were created quickly with the perception that we could easily edit and reproduce the visuals we needed in a timely manner. As a long-time SketchUp user as a designer at architecture firms across the US, I always modeled in SketchUp freely and without much use for standards, thoughtful collaboration, or extensions.
